How to Create a Bobbin for a Loom [VIDEO]

Not only do we sometimes have to create extra spools for the creel, but we also have to create bobbins for the loom. Like our other machine, this one is specially designed to automatically measure how much of the fiber we need.

Watch below as Arthur shows us how it’s done!

What if there aren’t enough combs for the warper? [VIDEO]

When you have 600 combs (or spools of yarn) to fill, sometimes there just aren’t enough for the job. That’s why we have a handy dandy machine at our disposal. It takes the larger combs and re-spools it into a smaller, more manageable comb.

The machine will measure exactly how much of the fiber you need. In order to create a full set of 600 combs, it is a full 8 hours worth of work!

Watch below as Arthur shows us how it works:

6 Ways to Easily Add Color to Your Home

Beige can get boring, especially in the heat of the summer. But you don’t have to completely redesign your room to add a little color. Here are a few quick and easy ways to add some color – and great focal points – to your home.

Paint

A change in paint color will quickly and easily change the feel of a room. The great news? A can of paint is inexpensive, and the biggest cost is your own time. If you’re feeling a little abstract, try painting only one wall for a great focal point.

Throw pillows

Adding a few colorful pillows on your couch, chairs, or even the floor will brighten up a room in an instant. Throw pillows are a really easy way to change the look and feel of your room depending on the season, so feel free to change these pillows out, come fall!

Lamp

Getting a cool, funky lamp can brighten (pardon the pun) your room immediately. Lamps are a great way to show off your personality – be it vintage, modern, eclectic, or classic. Like throw pillows, you can easily change out the lamp shade depending on the season.

Throw rug

Even if you have a carpet in the room already, adding a throw rug is a great way to add color to a room and to an unusual focal point: the floor.

Piece of art

It’s no surprise adding a piece of art to your wall can add a color and make a quick change to the feel of a room. But here’s a DIY tip you may not have thought of: try buying a great piece of wallpaper and covering a canvas. That way, you can fully customize your wall art, and for only a few dollars!

Blanket

Last, but certainly not least, a blanket – draped over the back of a chair or on a bed – is one of the easiest way to add color to your room. Plus, there is the added benefit of keeping you warm and cozy on a cool night! For some colorful blanket styles, be sure to check out our day blanket collection.

How Textiles Are Made, Part 2: The Warper [VIDEO]

Recently, we talked about what the creel is. Today, we’re going to talk about what happens next in a fiber’s journey to becoming a textile.

From the creel, the 600 combs are all hand fed to 600 individual reeds in the warper. The warper is responsible for the vertical fiber in the textile: the warp (the horizontal fiber is called the weft).

Below, you’ll see the Brahms Mount warper in the foreground and the creel in the background:

Warper and creel

Once all of the yarn from the creel has been fed into the warper, it gets to work. Watch below as Arthur explains how the warper puts all of these fibers on to the racks.

Cotton vs. Linen: What’s the Difference?

Linen and cotton, both natural vegetable fibers, make great materials for blankets and throws. Both fibers are absorbent, durable and become softer with use. Even with all of their similarities, there are some significant differences between the two fibers that may help you choose the right fabric for you.

Cotton

Harvested from cotton plants, the cotton fiber tends to wrinkle less than linen. Known for being softer and warmer, cotton holds its elasticity wash after wash. Cotton blankets also tend to feel more substantial.

Linen

From the flax plant, linen is typically a little smoother than cotton. An incredibly strong fiber, linen feels cooler than many other fabrics. It also weighs less and has more texture.

What’s better than a blend?

Don’t discount linen/cotton blends, with the familiarity of cotton and the breathability of linen.

How Textiles Are Made: What is the Creel? [VIDEO]

At Brahms Mount, our blankets start off as yarn on a spool (what we call combs) – pictured below. All of our material comes this way, from cotton to linen to blends. So how do we take this raw material and make blankets and throws from it?

Comb of yarn

Our process starts with the creel (below), which holds all of the combs for any given textile. Our creel holds up to 600 combs, from where we pull (by hand) the individual 600 pieces of thread through a specific groove to the warper: the next step in the process.

How to Care for Your Cotton or Linen Brahms Mount Blanket

Congratulations! You’re the proud new owner of a Brahms Mount blanket. Whether cotton or linen or a blend of both, you’ll love how easy it is to care for your new throw.

Cotton Blankets and Throws

Washing

  • A front loading machine is ideal to give plenty of room for circulation.
  • Wash on a short, gentle cycle on low heat, with as much water as possible to allow for movement.
  • Avoid harsh detergents. Use a liquid detergent without bleach or brighteners. Always pre-dilute your detergent.

Drying

  • Careful drying is very important.
  • Tumble dry on delicate setting, medium to high heat.
  • Tumbling helps keep a soft drape. It’s best not to line dry.
  • It’s better to remove the blanket slightly damp from the dryer; that way, you’ll avoid baking and breaking the fibers.

Drying

  • Careful drying is very important.
  • Tumble dry on delicate setting. With linen, use low or no heat; with linen/cotton, use medium heat.
  • Linen will become brittle if it’s dried at a high temperature or for an extended period. Whenever the fabric rubs on itself in a “dry” condition, it will abrade and show fiber on the surface.
  • Tumbling helps keep a soft drape. You can line dry, but the fabric will initially be very stiff.
  • It’s better to remove the blanket slightly damp from the dryer; that way, you’ll avoid baking and breaking the fibers.
